1. Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive.
2. Type D: (or the appropriate drive letter) and then hit the ENTER key.
3. Type INSTALL and then the hit ENTER key. This will begin the installation process.
4. When the installation is complete, the program will ask you to answer some questions regarding your configuration of sound cards and other input devices. If at any time after doing this you wish to change your setup, please run the "Setup" program from the directory in which you have installed the game.

1. Problem: The game keeps cycling between the demo and the main menu... Solution: If you are experiencing this problem, you will want to make sure that you download the patch file:

2. Problem: When loading a game, I get the error: "Unable to open res file." Solution: Add a "files statement" in the CONFIG.SYS file. M.A.X requires the files environment variable to be 1 or 2 more than the DOS default. Adding a line that says:

FILES=25

3. Problem: With a Minimum or Medium install the mouse pauses every once in a while not allowing movement. Solution: The game is accessing the CD for the music files. Turn the Volume Slider all the way down. With volume at 0 it won't access the CD at all.

4. Problem: Upon boot up I get the message "Out of Environment Space." Solution: You will need to add:

SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM

5. Problem: The sound "Pops." Solution: This is a Win95 problem. Restarting the computer in MS-DOS mode should fix this problem.

6. Problem: The game crashes with the error: "Out of memory for buffers." Solution: Check the hard drive space. Because of virtual memory requirements, M.A.X. needs between 12 - 20 megs free on the hard drive. We have seen this happen when the hard drive space was sufficient, but only rarely.

7. Problem: Clock goes down to 0:00 but doesn’t continue. Solution: If you are experiencing this problem, you will want to make sure that you download the patch file:

8. Problem: I'm getting an "Out of Sync" message in network play. Solution: Try ending the turn without doing anything and then continuing on. This will generally fix the problem although not always. The cause of this is different each time so the patch will include fixes for many of them:

9. Problem: In a network game, it crashes out with: "Assert Failure - Buildings packets." Solution: Unfortunately, there is no solution for this problem at this time. Please contact Technical Support to provide our technicians with further information about your computer system:

• What kind of computer?
• How much RAM is installed?
• What OS (DOS/Win3.x, Windows95, OS/2, etc)?
• What kind of processor (AMD, Cyrix, NexGen, Intel)?
• What kind of sound card?
• What are the settings on the sound card?
• How many CD-ROM drives?
• What kind(s) of CD-ROM drive(s)?
• Is(Are) the CD-ROM drive(s) IDE or SCSI?
• What kind of video card?
• How much RAM is on the video card?
• How are you trying to run the program?

10. Problem: We crashed in a network game, and now every time we load it, one of our systems crashes. Solution: Try rebooting all the computers as this generally will fix the problem. Only one bug of this type will cause the game to not continue.

11. Problem: In network and modem/null modem play, the game disconnects randomly. Solution: The cause at this time appears to be certain network cards. Try downloading the patch, as that should help you with this problem:

12. What is the difference between playing M.A.X. in real time mode instead of turn based mode? Solution: Real time in M.A.X. is slightly different than real time in C&C or Warcraft. It is called concurrent time. You and your opponent (human or computer) play simultaneously, but each unit can only move once per turn. You decide which units you want to move first. Your opponent is doing the same thing. When you have moved everything you want in a turn, you hit END TURN and a timer starts ticking down. Before the game, you set how long you want that timer to go (how long you want to give your opponent to finish his turn once you have finished yours). When both players have hit END TURN or the timer runs out, the next turn begins. So it is simultaneous movement in a turn based system. True turn based systems have one player take his/her turn, then the other player goes.

13. Problem: I get the message: "Screen Init Failed." What should I do? Solution: First, try executing the game by typing MAXRUN.BAT and hitting the ENTER key. If you are still having problems, try loading a VESA driver. If you know what kind of video card you have, you may want to contact your video card manufacturer and request a VESA 1.2 compliant driver. However, if you don't know what kind of video card you have, you may go ahead and contact the company that manufactured your computer.
